Photograph was edited for publication purposes. Not long after Joan Barry filed the first paternity suit against Chaplin, federal prosecutors brought Mann Act charges against Charlie Chaplin in relation to Barry; he was acquitted. Photograph caption dated March 23, 1944 reads, "Charlie Chaplin, accused of Mann Act violation, draws pictures while court proceedings progress. Here he appears to be in a happy mood, apparently unmindful of legal battles being waged."
