This image ran in the November 18, 1965 issue of the Los Angeles Sentinel.; Title supplied by cataloger.
Rolland Joseph 'Speedy' Curtis was born in Louisiana in 1922. After serving three years in the Marines during World War II, he and his wife, Gloria, relocated from New Orleans to Los Angeles in 1946. Curtis served four years with the Los Angeles Police Department, but resigned from the force in order to pursue both a Bachelor's and Master's degree from USC. He later became involved in city politics, as an associate of Sam Yorty, and later a field deputy to City Council members Billy Mills and Tom Bradley. He was briefly director of the Model Cities program in 1973. Rolland J. Curtis died in his home in 1979, the victim of a homicide. An affordable housing complex on Exposition Blvd. near Vermont Ave. was named in his honor in 1981, along with a nearby street and park.; Thomas M. Rees (1925-2003) was an American lawyer and politician who served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Rees was elected to the California State Assembly in 1954 at the age of 29, and served until 1963. He served in the California Senate from 1963 to 1966, and served as a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions from 1956 to 1968. Rees was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1965 and served six terms as a U.S. Representative from California from 1966 to 1977. He introduced the bill in the state legislature which created the Southern California Rapid Transit District. Mr. Rees died in 2003 at the age of 78.
California State Senator Thomas M. Rees (left) is shown talking with city worker Timothy Brown during his Congressional campaign for the 26th District. Brown appears to be holding a campaign pamphlet as they both stand next to his city work vehicle which reads, "Hey there! You with the trash in your hand, Cooperate with Los Angeles Clean City Crusade." The City of Los Angeles seal is visible on the vehicle at bottom left. Photograph circa 1965.
