Photograph caption dated August 6, 1963 reads, "Canadian champion Elmer Hohl showed how great horseshoe pitchers do it as he competes in world championships which wind up tonight at South Gate Park in South Gate. Going into final day of six-day competition, Hohl, pictured above, was tied for second place behind John Monasmith of Yakima, Wash. Hohl, a resident of Wellsleys, Ont., was one of pre-tournament favorites, along with defending world's champion Paul Focht of Dayton, Ohio. In the 30th round of match games Monday night, Monasmith threw 121 ringers out of 142 shoes, and took a one-game lead into tonight's final five match games. More than 125 men entered the world's championships in South Gate, plus a dozen ladies and juniors. In a final game yesterday at the South Gate municipal park, the national junior title was won for the third year in a row by Gary Roberts of Lucasville, Orio [sic]."
