Views of the approach to the stūpa via the eastern gate. The flight of steps is flanked by unadorned guardstones, as found in most of the earlier religious edifices in Sri Lanka. The small cistern below the stairway at right would have provided water for pilgrims to wash their feet prior to entering the sacred premises.
