Photograph was edited for publication purposes The Calamigos Star C Ranch was founded by J. Grant and Helen Gerson in 1947. The 120-acre ranch was built to resemble a town in the Old West, holding overnight summer camp and later switching to day camp. The teen-age Beauty Farm was opened in 1961. The "farm" functioned as a health club, charm school, and summer camp all rolled into one. The ranch is now used for weddings, conferences, corporate picnics and movie and TV shoots, and is operated by the Gerson's grandsons, Garrett and Garner Gerson. Photograph caption dated June 27, 1964 reads "An individual physical program is set up for each girl under the direction of the farm's doctor and program director. Exercise is given in slim 'n trim, water exercises, yoga instruction, in addition to sessions in the Steam Kiva. The girls learn grooming and poise as well as how to lose weight or overcome shyness. Jean Ingram, instructor, teaches a modern dance class in the ranch gymnasium." The teen-age Beauty Farm is located in the hills above Malibu.; See images #00119943 through #00119947 for all photos in this series.
