Description
“Mariam Samweli died a martyr’s death, strangled by 3 men as she refused to take a Mau Mau oath.” Exterior view showing a funeral service around an open grave. Mariamu Ndago Samweli was the first Christian to be murdered in the Chogoria district by the Mau Mau when she was abducted and refused to swear an oath of allegiance during the uprising. She was buried next to the church in Chogoria. ❧ The image is from the collection of Dr Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) showing the period from 1947-1961 at the Chogoria mission which was established near Mt Kenya, in 1922, and run by Dr Irvine.
