Description
Under George Roeding, Jr. the nursery became a destination for visitors. They had thousands of visitors on some weekends during their annual bulb show. The shows ran from the 1930s to the 1960s. The film predates the 1934 retail center (removed in 2019) and the Display Gardens. Footage includes: Bulb Show April 1932 (first one?); Opening scene is a roadside garden; Cars; "In Garden of "Old Adobe" our guest lodge, built by Don Jose de Jesus Vallejo over 100 years ago"; Frances Roeding and son, Bruce, exit the Old Adobe; Garden was recently designed by Johannes Reimers; The "Old Adobe" restored and updated into modern guest lodge by Frederick Reimers; Mr. and Mrs. Thane, pioneer residents of Niles, with George C. Roeding, Jr.; Flower varieties; Interior of sales lath house; Tulip gardens where over 100 varieties were tested; Bruce Roeding and dog. Tulip varieties shown: Darwin Tulip (Euterpe, Princess Elizabeth, Alexandre Bleu, Pride of Haarlem, Clara Butt with arbor in the back of the Roeding garden, Ariadne, Rev. H. Eubank, Prince of Wales, Sir Trevor Lawrence); Cottage Tulip (Picotee, Mrs. Moon, Rosabella, Barbara Pratt, Dido, Carrara, Ambrosia); Breeder Tulips (Pink Pearl, Indian Chief, Sunbeam); Rembrandt Tulip Thetis; Emperor daffodil; Wedgewood Dutch iris; Swiss giant pansies; Apricot violas; Primula malacoides; Azalea (Mme. van der Creuyssen); Pink Pearl Flowering Cherry; Bruce Roeding and Togo; The nursery created motion pictures like this to show at garden club and similar organizations. References to showings are in the newspapers.
