Description
A Mercantile Library Association in Sacramento was discussed as early as June of 1850, and after a first attempt was foiled by fire a subscription service Library Association was formed in 1857 and housed at the corner of J and Fifth Streets. In 1872 the first library building was erected one block west of the current structure on I Street for the then Sacramento Library Association, and the City of Sacramento took over the property and the library building in March of 1879. In May of 1913 the Veteran Knights of Pythias of Sacramento began arrangements with the Carnegie Corporation that would result in the construction of the current building at the corner of I and Ninth Streets. Architect Loring P. Rixford was chosen to helm the project which utilized the talents of the Gladding, McBean Company of Lincoln, California, famous for terra cotta designs that still grace the venerable structure. The pictured structure opened in April 1918.
