Photograph was edited for publication purposes Photograph article dated March 5, 1964 partially reads, "If you can pan $50 in gold nuggets in less than a minute, you stand a chance in the world championship gold panning contest this weekend at Rosamond. If you can't, it'll be fun to watch anyway as a handful of men try to dethrone the current champion - a woman. The operators of Burton's Tropico Gold Mine and Mill - where the clash of the sourdoughs will be held - have a full weekend planned to attract visitors to the the [sic] 90-year-old mine and gold camp. A panning contest for youngsters is set for Saturday. On Sunday, the world championship panning contest, a hard rock panning contest and an antique auto meet will be held. And best of all: everything's free." Photograph caption reads, "Champion panner - Mrs. Frankie Lowry of Cement Creek, Colo., foreground, is shown as she turns her winning gold pan over to judges last year in the Rosamond gold-panning contest. She'll be back this weekend to defend her title."; See image #00133514 for additional photo in this series.
