Description
1989-1219. In: [Scenes of Sacramento] [manuscript] / Eugene Walter Hepting. [Sacramento, Calif. : E. Hepting, 1938?], Vol. C, leaf 12. Large rectangular building takes up most of the photo; a staircase leads up to the entrance in front and to the side; a brickwall in front hides the staircase and at level of door on the side has an arched window; behind this brick wall stands the building of two stories; the second story features at each side an arched opening with a smaller arched stained-glass window partly filling up the arched opening; between these arches is a large blind circle; above the building its roofline undulates from two side rounded top element to a center rounded top element;next door on left is a single two story house with a wooden railing hiding a staircase; car is parked in front. Walter Hepting was born in Sacramento (father was from Switzerland, mother from Germany). Worked for the State Treasurer's Office. Was amateur historian, collected old photographs and images of Sacramento. "Oldest Church-building in Sacramento standing to-day. Church for the colored people. Organized in a house on I street. bet. 4th and 5th streets in June 1850 by Barney Fletcher. The church was called St. Andrews M.E. Church in 1851 and still bears that name."
