Description
A group of survival school students (L-R) Joel Turner, an unidentified assistant, Jack Madeley, and the instructor Harry Claflin take a break from first-aid courses. Turner and Madeley hold bandages in their hands as they huddle around Claflin (right) who sits on a bench and holds a mug in one hand, and the assistant (center, left) who smokes from a pipe. The 160-acre camp, better known as the Starlight Training Center in Liberal, Missouri, was owned by Claflin, a former U.S. Marine in Vietnam. The students are U.S. civilians with different backgrounds and professions who paid money in exchange for survivalist training. Claflin also spent time studying the tactics, troop proficiency, and military effectiveness of foreign countries like those in Central America where he trained Guatemalan, Nicaraguan, and Salvadoran special forces. All his assistants have law enforcement or military backgrounds as well.
