Description
This circa 1916 photograph shows the Westminster Presbyterian Church as it sits on the northwest corner of Thirteenth and K. Built in 1904 for a cost of 25,000 dollars, the brick structure was twice the size of its Sixth and L Street predecessor. It was also fitted with a water-powered pipe organ, drinking fountains, modern plumbing, a kitchen under the choir loft and a coal furnace which could heat the entire building. With membership at just over 1,300 in 1926, more space became essential. It was torn down in mid-September of 1927 after a final “Reminiscence Service” on the fourth of the same month. Until the congregation could move into its inspiring new structure at Thirteenth and N Streets, it would rent out the Memorial Auditorium for 100 dollars a service.
