Born in 1934 in Washington, D.C., grew up in Los Angeles. Earned law degree from Southwestern University, Los Angeles in 1967, practiced law for several years before being elected to the State Assembly, serving from 1972-1978. Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving from 1979-2000.
