Description
Survival school students (L-R), Allen Mons, Marilyn Chandler, Joel Turner, Jack Madeley, Ron Venn, and Brian Schwarz each carry or rest their backpacks on the floor while they hold a rifle in between their hands and form a military-style lineup every day at 7:00 a.m. The instructor Harry Claflin and an unidentified assistant (L-R) stand to the side. The 160-acre camp, better known as the Starlight Training Center in Liberal, Missouri, was owned by Claflin, a former U.S. Marine in Vietnam. The students are U.S. civilians with different backgrounds and professions who paid money in exchange for survivalist training. Claflin studied the tactics, troop proficiency, and military effectiveness of foreign countries like those in Central America where he trained Guatemalan, Nicaraguan, and Salvadoran special forces.
