During the 2018 fires, I was in New York City for 2 exhibitions of my work at galleries there when I heard the terrible news. Upon my return home, I found my land strewn with debris from the fires even though I live at least 9 miles from the nearest fire. Over a period of several days, I solemnly collected burnt remains of other peoples' lives: pages from stamp collections, singed recipes, building materials, fragments of novels, and a few small pieces of musical scores. To make this work I delicately arranged the score fragments on a photographic scanner and made an archival print. The entire experience brought back memories and even smells from the first night when I moved to Sonoma County 30 years ago when an arsonist set fire to my barn/studio. Ashes from the October fires continued to rain down on my pasture for days until the rains came.
