Photograph caption dated May 10, 1965 reads, "The dam changed the Colorado River from a natural menace to a national resource--strengthening the economy of the Pacific Southwest and the nation. Its regulation protects the rich farmland of the Coachella and Imperial valleys and also provides water and power for use in metropolitan Los Angeles."
