Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1889-1989 Barney Oldfield races his front-drive Christie against a Curtis bi-plane at the old Ascot track. The first mile-a-minute race-car driver, Oldfield helped to popularize automobiles at the turn of the 20th Century. (It was said that his success enabled Henry Ford to finance the Model T.) He drove with a cigar clamped between his teeth--which he said served as a shock absorber on jaw-rattling rides.
