The unedited transcript of Adrian Wooldridge's interview with Paul Polman for the December 2012 episode of Drucker on the Dial entitled "Postcards from Vienna." The interview is from a plenary session held during the 2012 Global Peter Drucker Forum in Vienna, Austria in November 2012. First, Deepa Prahalad, introduces Paul Polman, chief executive officer of Unilever. Paul Polman says that while capitalism has brought us very far, it also has stresses and shortcomings. He explains why businesses need to be a part of the solution for a more sustainable and equitable world, and for becoming a proactive actor in finding solutions. Polman adds that too many businesses feel that they can benefit from a system without participating in that system, but he believes that this is no longer healthy, and that it will be rejected. He discusses the need for a model that can actually reduce resources and is able to bring the effects of climate change down. Polman describes the Unilever Sustainability Living Plan, and talks about corporate social responsibility (CSR). He explains why he decided to report twice a year instead of quarterly, and talks about the John Kay report. Polman then goes on to answer questions from the audience regarding capitalism in the political domain, youth unemployment and education, and partnerships between corporations and social enterprise as a source of innovation.
