Exhibit panel titled "Music and public programs at Manzanar." Panel includes nine photographs of musical and public programs at Manzanar. Included are photos of Mary Kageyama (Nomura) performing on stage in the Manzanar Auditorium backed by a choir, Music Director Louis Frizzell Jr., a Christmas program in 1943, the Manzanar Jive Bombers Band, the Manzanar High Glee Club and Orchestra, and Rosie Maruki at the Summer 1943 Prom. Also included is a photo of Mary Kageyama standing next to a piano at the Pasadena Friends Church Hostel in 1945 after leaving Manzanar, and a photo of 9 women kneeling in traditional Japanese dress with 13 men wearing suits standing behind them. The Eastern California Museum Object ID for this item is 1994.80.178. A collection of panel collages created by Shiro and Mary Nomura, both of whom were incarcerated at Manzanar from 1942-1945, for the Eastern California Museum's Manzanar Project. The panels are comprised of photographs, artifacts, documents, and stories collected by "Shi" starting in the 1970s. Over the following 20 years, the Nomuras assembled more than 75 panels depicting their personal interpretation of Manzanar 'camp' life, major events, history, and site preservation efforts. In each panel Shi and Mary provide valuable first-person documentation from their experiences. These panels have been displayed at various community events, annual Manzanar Pilgrimages, and the Eastern California Museum (the permanent home of the collection).
