Description
Pictured on Oct. 29, 1949, is the “second” lobby of the Crest Theater at 1013 K St. During reconstruction that started in August 1948, the entrance to the theater was expanded to equal two storefront widths. Beyond this, visitors were greeted by two gold-colored sculpted reliefs, one of which is visible at left side of the photograph. The theater's California-related themes invoked gold panning and fruit-picking. The ceiling at the upper part of the photograph is covered with gold leaves and feathers, a design concept that recurs throughout the venue. The painting on the far left side of the photograph is, again, distinctly Californian, with its depiction of vineyards. The Crest opened three weeks before this photograph was taken.
