This is a photograph of "Mr. Poon of Loking [now Luoding]. This is a typical picture of and old timer with his long Chinese pipe. The pipe is made out of bamboo and gives a very cool smoke. The pipe was too long for one picture. The thing that looks like a spider is his tobacco pouch which is suspended from the pipe by means of a string. The pipe holds enough [of] tobacco for a short and refreshing drag. How does he light the pipe? The pipe is too long and his arm too short to light it with an ordinary match. The method: he prepares the pipe, lights a long Chinese 'slow match', places the match on the table, walks a short distance, sits down, puts the pipe in his mouth, makes contact with the distant match, and the fire starts. Another method: puts the Chinese 'slow match' between his toes, rest the pipe on the ground and lights it. Rather amusing to see this operation and how clever these Chinese men are. Mr. Poon is 66 years old. He is a school teacher and has plenty of money 'salted away.' He isn't a Christian yet, but expects to be soon."
