Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. At the time of the Loma Prieta Earthquake Steve Ng was and Associate Bridge Engineer for Caltrans. In the interview, Ng describes his personal earthquake experience in Sacramento. Later, he describes his experience at the Cypress Structure, having to live out of a hotel in Emeryville, and spending the rest of the first week after the earthquake surveying structures based on reports of damage from calls from the public. Then he spent another two weeks surveying the distribution structure, which feeds the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge, 80 to San Francisco, Route 580 and Route 880 where they all converge. All of the information Ng collected was recorded in reports for Caltrans.
