Theodore Cordy "Ted" Freeman (Capt, USAF) was killed on October 31, 1964 in the crash of a T-38 jet; his death marked the first fatality among the NASA Astronaut Corps.
Photograph caption dated October 19, 1963 reads, "Happy astronaut families - The families of three men joining the U.S. space agency's pool of astronauts, some of whom may reach the moon, smiled happily Friday at Edwards Air Force Base following the announcement of their husbands' selection in Houston, Tex.
