In 1955, actress Jane Russell founded the World Adoption International Fund, sometimes locally referred to as the Women's Adoption International Fund. WAIF was a volunteer organization designed to help facilitate overseas adoptions by American couples. Russell adopted three children with husband Bob Waterfield and her career was nearly ended because of one of the adoptions. Photograph caption dated January 7, 1959 reads "Mrs. William Bidlack (Colleen Gray), 1958 president of Los Angeles Chapter, Women's Adoption International Fund (WAIF), hands over gavel to new president, Mrs. Richard L. Davis. Joan Castle Joseff of North Hollywood, treasurer, looks on."
