James Maury "Jim" Henson (1936-1990), one of the most widely known puppeteers ever, was best known as the creator of The Muppets, his most famous character being Kermit the Frog. Henson was an Oscar-nominated film director, Emmy Award-winning television producer, and the founder of The Jim Henson Company, the Jim Henson Foundation, and Jim Henson's Creature Shop. In addition to his own puppetry project, Henson also aided others in their work. He created advanced puppets for projects like Fraggle Rock, Muppet Babies, The Storyteller, and The Jim Henson Hour among other programs. He died on May 16, 1990 of organ failure resulting from a Group A streptococcal infection caused by Streptococcus pyogenes. Henson was cremated at Ferncliff Cemetery, and his ashes were scattered at his ranch in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Photograph caption dated October 22, 1985 reads, "Women in Show Business celebrated its silver anniversary (that's 25 years) with a black-tie gala at the Century Plaza that honored some top names in the business. Jim Henson, left, received the lifetime achievement award and brought along Kermit to say a few words. Henson was introduced by Scherr Lillico, right, co-chairwoman of the gala (along with Linda Desiante)."
