Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. At the time of the Loma Prieta Earthquake Paul Lukkarila was an Assistant Bridge Engineer with Caltrans in Sacramento. In this interview Lukkarila describes his experience working at the Cypress Viaduct having to coordinate all the people who wanted access to the structure including contractors, first responders and paratroopers. He also offers some suggestions of what could have been done differently for the next major earthquake.
