Image is a photograph of a photograph, which was edited for publication. On February 8, 1976, a Mercer Airlines DC-6 experienced mechanical problems after take-off from Burbank Airport and attempted to make an emergency landing at Van Nuys Airport. On its way down, the plane struck a concrete foundation of a partially constructed building and stopped against a house trailer parked near the Woodley Municipal Golf Course. Three of the plane's six occupants died as a result of the crash. Photograph caption dated September 24, 1978 reads, "Plane crash in 1976 reopened the issue of the safety of the polyester worn by Los Angeles firemen."
