James Leonard Farmer, Jr. was an integral figure in the Civil Rights Movement. He was co-founder of the Congress of Racial Equality, an organization that fought for integration through non-violence, and led the organization from 1942-1944. He also organized and led the first Freedom Ride in 1961. Photograph caption dated December 15, 1964 reads, "James Farmer, center, executive director of the Congress of Racial Equality, talks with Sil Blake, left, president of the Student Civil Liberties Union at Valley State College, and John Mazo, vice president."
