Description
The four "Progress in Electronics" commemorative stamps were issued July 10, 1973, including one that featured the De Forest Audions. At the time, Marie de Forest was living in Hemet, California, and on July 11th, the San Jacinto Post Office inaugurated the first issue of the stamps, autographed by Mrs. de Forest. Photographs of the event are included in the folder. According to The Hemet News (12 July 1973), those in attendance were Mr. and Mrs. Jim Richards of KHSJ, Father Norman Lord of St. Joseph's Catholic Church (Soboba), Rev. Stanley Benson of Grace Memorial Church (San Jacinto), Mr. and Mrs. Hal Jahn of the San Jacinto Chamber, Councilman and Mrs. Kent Cozad of Hemet, and Dr. and Mrs. K. M. Larson. Folder includes local news clippings about the event; U.S. Postal Service "Regional Bulletin Western" Bulletin 75, San Francisco, 7 August 1973; U.S. Postal Service "Progress in Electronics" fact sheet, including one of each stamp; Program for the First-Day-Of-Issue Ceremony at AT&T Long Lines Department, New York (10 July 1973) (2003-34-667a); two First Day of Issue stamped envelopes addressed to Mrs. Lee de Forest from the San Jacinto Chamber of Commerce and the Space Science Center, Los Altos Hills; a stamped, Lee de Forest commemorative envelope from the Antique Radio Press with the Progress in Electronics stamp, addressed to Mrs. Lee de Forest and postmarked 26 August 1973. Also includes a "Spark to Space Salute" Progress in Electronics First Day of Issue envelope featuring an image of Lee de Forest holding his audion, sent from Marie to the Space Science Center at Los Altos Hills.
