Description
A daguerreotype of Captain William Anthony Richardson. A note included with the photo reads: "San Francisco, May 24, 1874-- The daguerreotype picture of Captian William Anthony Richardson I had taken in San Francisco, California by Vance [ed. note: Robert H. Vance, 1825-1876, American photographer who came to California in the 1850s to photograph the Gold Rush and soon had many galleries in California and Nevada.] artist in the year 1854 (about) because seeing him as a witness for the Defendent in Leonard vs. Darlington in the 4th District Courts, I took a great fancy for him; so seeing him soon after I solicited him to sit for his picture, to which he consented if I could get a telescope for him to hold indicating him as a shipmaster. I borrowed one and this picture is the result. His dust was interred at Sausalito May 22 1874 as appears from this scrip from 'Evening Post'. Signed S.W. Holladay May 24 1874".
