Photograph caption dated April 21, 1956 reads "John Burroughs High School's sensational pole vaulter Jim Smith is seen clearing 12 feet yesterday in the dual meet with Burbank High. Smith is only a Class Cee athlete but vaulted varsity yesterday and has a best of 12 feet 6 inches this year. He was second yesterday to Burbank's star Ron Di Harce. Burbank won the intra-city meet 64-40."
