Charles Handy was awarded the 2005 ASTD (American Society for Traing & Development) Lifetime Achievement Award in Advancing Workplace Learning and Performance, which recognizes individuals who advance knowledge in the workplace learning and performance field (see page 4). The 2005 award recognized Handy’s notable work over three decades that addressed not only what people should learn at work but how people should think about their careers, work, and themselves. In particular, ASTD recognized Handy’s belief that people should find what they are most passionate about and work to build careers and companies that reflect those passions. They also note his contributions to the study of corporate citizenship, personal responsibility, and the import of ethics and values in the workplace. Finally, they recognize his work on education reform that highlighted the importance of “how?” and “why?” rather than just “what?” in education.
