Photograph caption dated March 25, 1954 reads, "Pacific Telephone Co.'s Jack Newkirk inserts metal card into translator of 4A machine, an electronic device which will permit long distance operators here to dial calls directly to many large cities across the nation. The $4,500,000 machine is expected to be ready for operation on May 30. Looking on is Vera Chadd."
