Photograph caption dated August 26, 1961 reads "Chess expert - Harold Milner, 16438 Gledhill St., Sepulveda, shows the game's finer points to a concentrating cluster of youngsters at Welby Way Elementary School, 23456 Welby Way St., Canoga Park. Milner, an elementary school teacher during the school term, appeared at some 56 West Valley elementary schools this summer under a skills and crafts program sponsored by the Los Angeles Board of Education. So far this summer, the chess instructor has taught the game to more than 1,000 children. At right, some of the pupils put their knowledge to work. The 'eye' (in photo at right) belongs to Nora Lee Conner, 6, 23801 Victory Blvd., Canoga Park. To her right is Sharon Jordan, 9, and Diana Jordan, 10, 23444 Kittridge St., Canoga Park. Most of the elementary schools wound up their summer programs this week.
