Description
Waist-length portrait. 2012-1282. Born in Brooklyn in 1887, came to California in 1850, where settled in San Francisco. Worked as steamboat engineer, organized and was member of first volunteer fire department, ran saloon on Mission Street, worked for the San Francisco Customs House. Was friend of Mark Twain, who used his name for character in his book "Tom Sawyer."
