The first engine, a 20 ton Shay-geared locomotive, came on loan from the Dollar Lumber Company from their Russian River logging operations. With it came Jake Johnson, Dollar's first and finest engineer. He was scheduled to return to the logging industry with his engine, but stayed on to run the first train and continued with the mountain railroad for 34 years, operating the very last train in 1930."
