DAG-0267 DAGUERREOTYPE-V: MORSE, JOHN FREDERICK Image package: Plate, mat, cover glass, preserver. Mat: decorative oval brass. Preserver: decorative. Case: leather; 3 3/4 x 3 1/4 in. Motif: floral (front), geometric (back), thin gold border around edge of case front and back. Pad: embossed red velvet with letters: "Geo. H. Johnson / 83 J St. / Sacramento" Waist-length portrait of seated man with left arm resting on back of chair, right hand resting in his lap; short hair, partial beard, no mustache. Restricted original. Use viewing prints only, shelved in the Portrait File. Copy prints available for viewing filed in the Portrait File under "Morse, John Frederick"; accession numbers 1990-1413 and 1994-0193 through 1994-0198. Negatives, No. 22,449 (4x5 in.) B/W (1990-1413) B/W; negative numbers 24,118a-h B/W, color, and color transparencies. Born Dec. 23, 1815 in Vermont to Elijah Morgan Morse and Hannah Curtiss Morse. Practiced medicine in Brooklyn until 1849. Sailed for California via Panama on bark Bogota. Worked in the mines before settling in Sacramento and resuming medical practice. In 1850, entered banking and real estate business, doing business in firm Warbass & Co.; in 1851 became editor of Sacramento Union newspaper; active in Odd Fellows' Association; served as trustee of the California State Library in 1862; in 1863, became Professor of Medicine in Medical Dept. of the University of the Pacific. Died in 1874.
