Portrait of Gen. Phineas Banning. Born in Delaware in 1831, came to Los Angeles in 1852 and began at once to take active interest in affairs. He founded the town of Wilmington and was manager of the Los Angeles and Wilmington Ry. He served as Bridgadier General, 1st Brigade, California militia. One of the prime movers in the early development of San Pedro Harbor. He married 1st, Rebecca Sanford in 1870; 2nd, Mary E. Hollister. Banning died in 1885.
