Description
The facade of the gymnasium at Grant Union High School is captured in this May 12, 1940, photograph. It was finished in May 1939 with a seating capacity of 2,000 and its first event was a homecoming day assembly. The school nickname - Pacers - was chosen by students with the horseracing heritage of the Del Paso Heights district in mind. The Pacers basketball team hosted games in the gymnasium and, in 1942, would be champions of the Foothill and San Joaquin League with a record of 13 wins and 5 losses. Notable victims were Sacramento High and McClatchy High. The gymnasium's construction was made possible by the Works Progress Administration.
