Constructed between 1909 and 1911 to the cost of over a million dollars, the 12-story Hall of Records (right) at 220 N. Broadway was demolished in September, 1973. Photograph caption dated August 2, 1946 reads, "Dwarfed by towering Los Angeles City Hall in the background is this one-story frame structure in the Civic Center which will be the site of a new county courthouse. Lack of space forced Los Angeles County to set up a court here in the building which was used for temporary wartime purposes. Proposition No. 1 on tomorrow's bond issue election ballot would provide new county courthouse and office buildings for various county departments."
