Description
Title supplied by cataloger.; Photograph was edited for publication purposes.; Photograph is torn at upper left corner.
Photograph caption dated December 11, 1939 reads "Jackie Robinson, brilliant Bruin backfield star, is pictured above as he sought to skirt left end. Gaspar is shown missing a tackle as Robinson fought his way back to the line of scrimmage. But before he could get farther he was brought to earth by All-American Harry Smith--with a 5-yard loss." Long before he broke Major League Baseball's color line with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Jackie Robinson excelled in football at UCLA. During the 1940s, he also played professionally, with the L.A. Bulldogs (football) and the L.A. Red Devils (basketball).
