Description
2008-2307. In: Photographic views of one hundred and twelve of the principal and most picturesque places of California, vol. 3, pg. 77. View of the Benton Mills and Dam on the Merced River in Mariposa County. Mill buildings at bottom right, water spills over rock wall of dam, hills beyond. Sign on building says Benton Mills. Also have negative: no. 29,072 (4x5 in. color transparency). Located on Merced River at Ridley's Ferry between Bear Valley and Coulterville. Built by John C. Fremont as part of his Las Mariposas ranch holdings, purchased from Juan B. Alvarado in 1847. Mill was completed in 1859, destroyed in 1862.
