Commissioners Dorothy Olson, Karin Urquhart and Roberta Dunham sitting on an old truck during a field trip to Deer Island to determine if it should be acquired. Deer Island was accessible only by boat until the late 19th century when much of Novato’s marshland was diked and drained for pasture land. The Open Space District acquired much of Deer Island in 1978 from the DeBorba family for $272,500. In 1983, another nine acres were added and the Deer Island house became a ranger residence.
