Note attached to photo: "Ships in variety wide enough to form a task force are shown as they were being repaired or outfitted along the wharves of the San Francisco shipyard of Bethlehem Steel Company. The picture, taken early in 1944, shows on the outer side of No. 7 wharf (right) the airplane carrier USS ESSEX (7). Farther out along this wharf and barely discernable is the battleship USS CALIFORNIA (5). On the inner side of Wharf #7 in the foreground is the M. S. PUEBLA (6), which is a German-built ship that was taken over by the Mexican Government, brought in for overhaul, and for use later in the Army Transport Service. Beyond the PUEBLA is the Victory ship WILLARD A. PARKER (4), undergoing repairs. Beyond the PARKER is the cruiser USS RENO (3), built in the yard and in for repairs. Alongside Wharf No. 6, in the left foreground, the finishing touches are being put on the new cruiser USS FLINT (2). Note attached to photo (continued): "Beyond and just to the left of the crane on Wharf 6, and alongside Wharf No. 5, is the 22,380 ton troop transport USS ADMIRAL W. L. CAPPS (1), built at the associated Bethlehem-Alameda yard in Alameda and being outfitted here. At other wharves and docks, being repaired or outfitted, were two destroyers, three destroyer escorts, two transports, a net tender, a Navy tug and two freighters of the U.S.S.R.
