Description
This photograph of the façade of the $1,000,000 Mercy Hospital at 4001 J Street. It was taken in 1928 and shows J Street looking north. Opened on February 11, 1925, the new four-story, 155-bed Mercy Hospital was built in the shape of an X to ensure – or so thought the designers – that patients would be afforded ample sunshine. Each of the four wings amounted to 101 feet in length and 41 feet in length. Grounds covered seven acres that were once part of the Inderkum family homestead. Prior to this, the facility was located at Twenty-Third and R Streets, where, built in 1897, it was known as the Mater Misericordiae or “Mother of Mercy” Hospital.
