Photograph showing the construction of the breakwater in San Pedro, ca.1900. There are two sets of railroad tracks on top of the breakwater those on the left are ridden by three cars carrying rock to be added to the breakwater, while those on the right have a large crane. The tracks are supported by wooden beams laid over the breakwater, which starts in the center in the foreground and wraps its way around to the right side of the image. "Length of breakwater is a few feet over 2 miles. Preliminary work was began in 1898 and actual work started the following year. Cost was about 3 million dollars".
