George Herman Ruth, Jr. was born on February 6, 1895 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was a Major League baseball player from 1914 to 1935. He began his career as a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, then went on to spend most of his career as an outfielder with the New York Yankees. He spent his final season with the Boston Braves. He was the first player to ever hit 60 home runs in one season, in 1927. He held the record for the total number of lifetime home runs, 714, until Hank Aaron broke it in 1974. Ruth was know by various nicknames, including "The Bambino" and "Sultan of Swat." A victim of cancer, he died on August 16, 1948.
Photograph caption dated September 19, 1949 reads "Late Babe Ruth swaps diamond stories with Sgt. Vic Penney, right, manager, and teammate." The article partially reads "Last year George 'Babe' Herman (sic), former baseball great and now a Pittsburgh Pirate scout, tabbed Penney's team among the best in the country." Detective Sergeant Penney of the Los Angeles Police Department organized a department baseball team.
