Description
Margaret Shafer and William C. Anderson (founder of Anderson-Barngrover Company, which became Food Machinery Corporation) were married in San Jose in 1886. They established their home on a small ranch between Los Gatos and Saratoga. A year later they moved to another ranch at the intersection of what is now Lincoln Avenue and Almaden Road. The Andersons were the parents of eight children and Margaret was heavily involved in their education. She was also active in the Willow Glen Methodist Church. Anderson is pictured in her wedding dress. The bodice is fitted and has an inner collar, with stand-up collar enhanced by a bar pin. Tight sleeves follow a natural line, and cording is used to accent the shoulder. Her hair is combed back in a knot and the front is softened by curled bangs, a popular style in the 1880s. (Description taken from "Pioneer Women of Santa Clara County: Selections from The Permanent Collection," by Helen Kuesel and Milita Rios-Samaniego, San Jose Historical Museum, 1991) She is pictured in her wedding dress.
