Description
This circa 1962 photograph shows the Rio Theater (521 J Street), formerly the El Rey Theater. Also seen is the Big Ben Loan Office (531 J Street), El Paso Cafe/Tavern (525 J Street), G 'n' M Club/Tavern (529 J Street), Pacific Hotel (527 J Street), Fong Sing Hand Laundry (527 J Street), and the Disabled Veterans Thrift Store (515 J Street). The Rio Theater survived for a few more years and alternated between live burlesque shows and Mexican movies, as advertised on the marquee.
