Description
Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast. Segment 1 (silent): Fire helmets being displayed and demonstrated to small group of people. According to script, "Also the latest line in firemen's head gear was displayed this afternoon at San Jose State. Four members of the San Jose Fire Department's Safety Committee were on hand at the Industrial Arts Building to inspect some of the fire helmets designed by students of the Industrial Design department. Student designer displayed his helmet model and described its advantages. Today's display featured various designs...some looking like a football helmet...others like a motorcycle patrolman's head piece...and still others resembling the latest style in astronauts head gear. All in the interest of firemen's safety." Segment 2: Begins with shot of small room of people and conference table at front. A woman in a suit is interviewed outside in a hallway, says she will defend herself to the committee. According to the script, "The State Teachers Credentials Committee has voted unanimously against recommending revocation of the credential of a San Diego teacher...but did reprimand her for a play she wrote. At the center of the controversy is Mrs. Geri Turner Davis. She wrote a controversial play called, 'A Cat Named Jesus.' The play, when performed in San Diego, was termed blasphemous. Some people sought to have her removed as a high school teacher, but the efforts have failed. The chairman of the committee did say, 'We deplore the use of cheap and vulgar language in the play.' He said such language tends to stir up racial tension. The play tells of a Negro, jailed unjustly, who became friendly with a cat owned by the jailers daughter. Mrs. Davis had these comments before the hearing..." Segment 3: Man in a white lab coat speaks to the camera about new services for alcoholics and how they will benefit individuals as well as the community. According to script, "San Jose City Manager A. P. 'Dutch' Hamann has asked the city council to approve an application for a $400,000 integrated comprehensive alcoholism program for the city. A presentation of information concerning such a program will be made at the city council's committee of the whole meeting next Monday afternoon. Dr. Robert Miller of the City Health Department talked with Channel 11 news about the proposed program...if approved, the new program would bring the total funds for combating alcoholism up to $700,000 per year." Segment 4 (silent): Catholic school students seated in an courtroom listening to a man speak next to black boards, before a group of people file in to have a seat at the front. According to script, "50 youngsters got a practical view of civics and social studies today with a tour through a courtroom. The youngsters were eighth graders from St. Mary's School at Third and Reed Streets in San Jose. The students sat quietly thru the morning, watching a case concerning two auto salesmen accused of altering sales contracts. Superior Court Judge Joseph Kelly called a recess during the proceedings, then after the jury, defendants and attorneys had left, explained the case to the students. The youngsters listened eagerly as the judge explained the various parts of his courtroom, then left the remaining time to answer questions, both about the case, and about trials in general. After that, Judge Kelly again donned his judicial robes, and the jurors filed into court, to resume hearing the case, with an audience of fifty fascinated youngsters."
